These were the words Chet Kuhlmann said to his dad on the way home from the last
basketball game in which he played. Chet chose to play in a tournament in
Hutchinson on April 12 and 13, 2003, rather than go to his first high school
prom. His rendition of playing the perfect game had little to do with how
many points he scored or being the star of the game. He talked about
playing without mistakes and doing his best to help his team. Two days
later, on Tuesday, April 15, Chet Kuhlmann was killed in a car accident while
on his way to school.
The Chet Kuhlmann memorial 3 on 3 basketball tournament is a celebration of
Chet’s short, but full life. It is a chance to spend a weekend the
way Chet would. He played to win, but more importantly, he played with
respect, utmost sportsmanship and style. Family, friends and players
remember Chet walking off the court sweaty, smiling and ready for the next
game. Chet played basketball for himself, for his teammates and for the
love of the game.
